Sexual Harassment Victim Support

Sexual harassment is a global issue. It is a form of gender-based violence – one of the most tolerated violations of workers’ human rights experienced by women across New Zealand.

Sexual harassment is a major issue caused by unequal power and gender relations. It mostly affects women and girls. New Zealand’s laws on sexual harassment are weak and poorly enforced. International students face a high risk due to being away from family, language barriers, and lack of accessible support.

Sexual harassment is the earliest forms of sexual misconduct and if not prevented, in most cases leads to sexual assault or violence. Often sexual harassment is not properly recognized and may be easily dismissed, we at NZISHS aim to provide support to prevent the escalation of the occurrence of harassment into assault.

WHAT WE DO

PREVENT

We seek to prevent sexual misconduct with awareness and guidelines; legal help is available for serious cases.

RESPONSE

We aim to be the first to respond to sexual misconduct, treating every case seriously and ensuring none are dismissed lightly.

OUTREACH

Our goal is to provide support and resources to those impacted by sexual misconduct, making sure help and advice are easily accessible.

TRUST

We aim to build trust with survivors and their loved ones by offering confidential support and prioritizing their well-being and autonomy in their healing and justice journey.

EDUCATE

We aim to educate on sexual misconduct, its effects, and legal rights, empowering people through workshops, resources, and advocacy to prevent and respond effectively.

CONCEALMENT

Our goal is to expose and tackle the concealment of sexual misconduct, advocating for transparency, accountability, and dismantling systems that promote silence or complicity.

    WHAT WE HOPE TO ACHIEVE

International students in Universities and workplaces will experience safer and more productive workplaces due to a reduction in sexual harassment. NZISHS will provide services that educate international students and lecturers on sexual harassment and the relevant policies and law.

We aim to work along with each University to promote awareness campaigns. NZISHS will tailor sexual harassment policies, implementation guides, and comprehensive multimedia training that students, teachers and classmates may deliver to prevent and report sexual harassment.

NZISHS will advocate improved student policies and frameworks that respond to sexual harassment in Universities. We will do this through engagement with lecturers and teachers as well as students. We will promote effective models to address sexual harassment that results in better school place practices and protections and improved policies.

NZISHS will address gender equality through the following:

    • Build confidence of female international students to recognise sexual harassment in schools and workplaces and voice their concerns.
    • Support female international students to report sexual harassment-free from negative consequences and to encourage men to be more respectful and speak out against it.
    • Strengthen Universities regulations and environments to promote mechanisms that address sexual harassment in schools and workplaces.
